Karting rewards its Champions and volunteers
More than 40 competitors and volunteers were honoured at the Barbados Karting Association’s (BKA) Prizegiving for the 2025 Sectus Technologies Championship on Saturday (January 31). Calem Maloney was crowned Champion Driver and Edward Norris Rookie Driver of the Year, while Jordyn Hinkson was the Most Improved Driver and Ava Mayers won the new-for-2025 Highest-placed Female Driver award.
Claiming his second Champion Driver title and his fourth consecutive victory in the 125cc Easykart class, Maloney ended the season with a total of 485 points, 41 ahead of Jaydn Brathwaite. After a season-long battle for the 60cc Easykart class title, which went down to the wire in the final race of the season, Brathwaite beat Hinkson by just one point, the closest margin in the championship’s history.
Founded in 1987, the BKA is eagerly looking forward to the start of its 40th season on Sunday, February 22. To enthusiastic applause in the Open-Air Suites at Bushy Park Barbados, Vice-Chairman Norman Catwell confirmed that Sectus Technologies will continue as title sponsor into 2026, while Chairman Barry Mayers highlighted some of the many positives from 2025.
Mayers said: “We saw the highest number of female competitors since 2015 - four last year - and have introduced a new annual trophy to recognise the highest-placed. And there was strong participation in the 60cc Cadet class, which is very encouraging for karting in Barbados, eight of our youngest competitors racing during 2025.”
Before trophies were presented to competitors, BKA volunteers received tokens of appreciation, Mayers adding: “A big thank-you to all our marshals and officials, who devote your time to the club and attend every event so faithfully; we truly appreciate you. Finally, a word of thanks to our championship sponsor Sectus Technologies and raceday sponsors Crane & Equipment, UpBeat Wholesale and Williams Equipment.”
