Maloney wins BKA crown, as Cadets fight to the end
Calem Maloney is the 2025 Barbados Karting Association (BKA) Champion Driver after winning his fourth consecutive Easykart 125cc class title. Bringing his total of victories for the year to 19, he shared the race wins in Sunday’s (November 16) final round of the Sectus Technologies Championship two apiece with outgoing Champion Jacob Mayers.
Twelve-year-old racers Jaydn Brathwaite and Jordyn Hinkson took the fight for the 60cc Cadet class title to a thrilling conclusion at Bushy Park, Brathwaite winning by just one point – the closest finish in the BKA category’s history – as the title was decided in the season’s final race. The Cadet class also saw a first race win for 10-year-old Ava Mayers.
After one dropped score, 10-time race-winner Hinkson led Brathwaite, who missed round four in August, by just 13 points. Despite injuring himself in a recent fall, Brathwaite was determined to race in the final and add to his total of nine race wins.
Hinkson was fastest in Practice and Qualifying, but Brathwaite took a lead he would not lose on the first lap of race one, finishing 1.7secs ahead of Hinkson, with Edward Norris third, Ava Mayers fourth. In the reverse grid race two, Norris led briefly, before first Brathwaite, then Hinkson passed him to repeat the race one result.
In race three, Mayers claimed her first win since joining the class in June, with Norris second, ahead of Brathwaite and Hinkson after pretty much everyone spun in the tricky conditions. While Brathwaite had finished ahead of Hinkson all day, he still trailed by three points, so whoever won the last race would win the Cadet class title.
As evenly matched as ever, their fastest laps separated by just hundredths of a second, Brathwaite crossed the line after eight laps to win the race by just three-tenths from Hinkson and become Cadet Class Champion by the smallest margin of one point. Brathwaite scored 444, Hinkson 443 – these two also second and third overall to Maloney - with Norris third in the final race and in the class at year-end with 360.
Maloney’s progress in the 125cc class had been less stressful, claiming 485 points, which proved to be his year-end total as Sunday was his lowest score. Jacob Mayers was fastest in Qualifying, ahead of Kayleigh Catwell, Aaron Blackett and Maloney, and led all the way in race one, with Blackett and Maloney second and third.
Maloney won the second and third races, ahead of Mayers and Blackett, then Blackett and Cody Mark, but Mayers was back at the front for the day’s last encounter, with Maloney and Blackett completing the podium. Aeden Bruce, who has won the Easykart 100cc Juniors class, which has not been so well-supported this year, won three of four duels with Sebastian Clarke, who prevailed in the day’s first race.
