Returnees win big at second Caterham Caribbean Cup
All three categories in last weekend’s (December 5/6) Caterham Caribbean Cup (CCC25) were won by drivers paying their second visit to Bushy Park Barbados. James Emson and son Tom won the Caterham Seven 310R title, Nick Highton and Lewis Thompson prevailed in 270R, while Charlie Lower partnered the only newcomer from the six, Kyle Townend, to win the Roadsport class, which was new to the island this year.
When John Bond beat Townend in Friday’s first qualifying session by just 8/1000ths of a second with Matt Fox another 5/100ths adrift, it was clear that the nip-and-tuck racing for which the British sports car manufacturer’s categories are reknowned had made it safely across the Atlantic, promising a repeat of the inaugural event in 2023.
More then 420 racing laps in 11 Sprint and Enduro events were contested on the St Philip facility’s 2.01-kilometre International Circuit, ending with a 100-minute floodlit Super-Enduro combining all three categories – even that was won by only 20 seconds. With Joker Laps in every race and pitstops in the Enduros with penalties for short stops, Caterham Motorsport and Bushy Park Motorsports Inc (BPMSI) laid on a challenging two days for nearly 40 competitors.
Just as they did two years ago in 270R when they won four races with five fastest laps the Emsons were on the case from the start in 310R. Tom topped qualifying in Group A, his father was second in Group B, then each won his Sprint Race. Three out of four Enduro wins and a clean sweep of fastest laps gave them their second Caribbean title.
Joe Priday and Dan Holland won the Saturday Enduro the Emsons lost to a clutch failure and were consistent in the weekend’s other events to finish second in 310R, with Richard and Will Coope third. As father and son teams, the Emsons and Coopes were joined by the only island participants, Geoff Ullyett and son Daniel, who finished fourth in 310R ahead of Keith Ashworth and Albert Vella.
In 270R, this year’s largest class, it was even closer: if the two groups had been qualifying together, 15 cars would have been within one second. The 2025 Academy Champion Will Harris was fastest in Group A, sharing with father Stephen, and two-time Caterham Seven UK Champion Thompson fastest in Group B, returning with Highton, whom he had partnered in 420R in CCC23.
Harris won the first Sprint, Highton the second, but a strong performance in the Enduros carried Highton and Thompson to the title, winning all but the 100-minute Super Enduro, where they finished second to Harrison Cavers, one of 10 participants who drove solo all weekend.
With podium finishes in the other three Enduros, Cavers finished second in the 270R standings, ahead of 2024 Academy Champion Paul Ogglesby, who clocked up three solo second-place finishes, then shared with Will Harris to finish third in the finale.
The eight-strong Roadsports entry included Matt Fox, Townend and Richard Davies, who finished second, third and fourth at year-end in the Caterham Academy, with three wins and eight further podium places between them. While Fox was a solo driver, Townend partnered with Lower, who had been the fastest qualifier in 270R two years ago, and Davies with fellow Academy racer Bond.
Repeating their UK successes, these three teams claimed all but one podium place between them – Eduardo Pontes finished third in the Group B Sprint – with the lion’s share going to Lower and Townend; each won his Sprint, then they shared victory in all but the first Enduro, which was won by Fox, and clocked six fastest laps.
Speaking for Caterham Motorsport, Simon Lambert said: “It’s been fantastic to be back here on the island for the second Caterham Caribbean Cup. Once again we’ve had exciting racing on a track that almost seems to have been built for Caterhams! We tightened up the Joker Lap this year to make it even more tactical and changed the format a little, culminating in Saturday’s ‘Night 100’, a 100-minute Enduro with 24 cars racing together. It’s been an unbelievable experience for everyone involved and we are hugely grateful to the Bushy Park team for making it possible. We hope to be back!”
