FIA V-P Daniel Coen in for Nations Cup at Bushy Park
Daniel Coen, Vice-President for Sport - North America of the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), will be at Bushy Park Barbados this weekend. The world governing body’s senior figure in the region is here for the Barbados Motoring Federation (BMF) OK-J Development Series Nations Cup.
The three-day meeting, organised by the Barbados Karting Association (BKA), will run from Friday to Sunday (August 15-17). Racing identical Vortex-engined Exprit OK-Junior karts, rising stars from the BKA will face competitors, aged between 12 and 16 years, from the Karting Associations of Jamaica (JKA) and Trinidad and Tobago (TTKA).
While many already have championship titles under their belts, each will be eager to claim the individual Champion Driver crown and also contribute to team success for their country in the Nations Cup. The karts, owned by the BMF, were used for three years in the Caribbean Junior Karting Academy Trophy (CJKAT), which hosted more than 30 young karters from Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago.
The BKA’s ‘home team’ will comprise Aeden Bruce, Oliver Judd and Jacob and Zak Mayers. With a 100 per cent win rate, Bruce currently leads the Easykart 100cc class, but has also been racing regularly against the BKA’s 2024 Most Improved Driver Judd in these OK-J karts, where Judd has won nine of their 12 encounters.
Jacob Mayers is the local club’s reigning Champion Driver, having won the Easykart 100cc title last year, beating cousin Zak, who was the 60cc Cadet class champion the year before. Both are now racing in the 125cc class.
Trinidad and Tobago’s Abishek Ramdeen and Alex Sharma are both enjoying successful seasons. With a 100 per cent record of race wins after six of nine rounds, Ramdeen leads the LO206 Sportsman class, in which he finished second last year in his Rookie season. Sharma, whose elder brother Aran finished fourth in CJKAT23, is leading the Rotax MAX Evo class and last October represented T&T at the FIA Motorsport Games in Spain alongside Ben Mahon.
Jamaica’s trio of competitors are Anthony Hogarth, Connor-Patrick Payne and Noah Thwaites. Hogarth has been racing with the JKA since he was five, rising through the classes Rotax Junior, currently fourth in the category. The only karter with CJKAT experience, having competed in 2023, Payne won the JKA’s one-off Abe Zaidie Handicap Race last year, while Thwaites is in only his second year of karting, having moved up from Rotax Minimax, where he finished fifth last year, to Rotax Junior.
Competitors will gather at Bushy Park on Friday to select their karts for the weekend, with two hours allowed for set-up and practice. There will be further free practice, qualifying and racing on both Saturday and Sunday, with day three running alongside the fourth round of the BKA’s 2025 Sectus Technologies Championship.
