Reigning Champion Driver Calem Maloney claimed a maximum 100 points for the third time this season at Sunday’s (October 1) Barbados Karting Association (BKA) Glassesco Raceday at Bushy Park Barbados. In doing so, he drew level with Blake Thompson who has slipped to second after leading since round three, as former double Champion Daniel Ullyett became the fourth different leader of the Sectus Technologies Championship this year. Just 14 points are spread across the three, with the final round on November 5.

Qualifying and the first two races ran in the wet, the mixed conditions combining with use of a track layout not seen for some time to shake up the overall and class standings. Ullyett easily won the first 100cc Easykart Juniors race but traded the lead with Raizer Stoute to win the second, before Stoute won two hotly-contested battles in the dry. With one second and three third places, Thompson scored less than the other two for the first time this year.

Maloney won only two of the four 125cc Easykart Lights races, as he battled with brother Zane, on a break from his FIA Formula 2 campaign, but the Red Bull Junior Driver was not scoring points. Closely matched, they even shared identical fastest laps in the first race, with winning margins counted in tenths, Calem successfully defending his lead in a fiercely-fought final race. Colin Bradshaw, Sebastian Thompson and Aaron Blackett shared the points-scoring podium finishes, while Mark Thompson, alone in 125cc Masters again, elected to run without points and reduce weight.

Barry Mayers, who was elected Chairman at the recent BKA AGM, said: “I clearly remember Zane when he started at three years old on the old Bushy Park, when I was racing shifter karts against his dad Sean and uncles Mark and Stuart. It is great to see him back at BKA karting events where his incredible career started offering some coaching to our young karters and keeping his reflexes intact.”

Honours were shared in the 60cc Cadet class, Zak Mayers winning the first and last races of the day to move up to fifth in the overall leader board and increase his lead in the class to 28 points from 19. His cousin Jacob, who won the second race, has now moved ahead of Aeden Bruce, who beat the Mayers cousins in the day’s third encounter after suffering disqualification from races one and two for being underweight.
