RALLY CLUB CELEBRATES SEASON’S END

More than 70 members of the island’s motor sport fraternity were honoured on Saturday evening (November 22) at the Barbados Rally Club’s (BRC) Annual Prizegiving, 13 of them winning return tickets to the UK courtesy of Virgin Atlantic, title sponsor of the Club’s RallySport Championship.
Among the awardees were marshals, whose voluntary contribution to the sport was recognised by Club Chairman Mark Hamilton. In an address, which also included thanks to the Club’s sponsors, its competitors and the island’s spectators, he said: “We could not run this sport as we do without the support of our marshals. Their commitment to the Club, their enthusiasm and the hours they put in are fantastic, and I thank them.”
Roger Skeete was crowned Overall Champion in the Virgin Atlantic RallySport Championship and also collected trophies for victory in the BRC Sprint Championship, overall and in Modified 8-WRC, and for third place in the BRC Rally Championship.
Anna-Lee Alleyne made Club history as the first female to win the Sextant Challenge Trophy, presented to the Champion Navigator in the Mud Dogs BRC Safari Championship; husband Leslie collected the Peter Farmer Memorial Trophy as Champion Driver, before the pair posed for photographs with his father Ronnie Alleyne, who presented the Joan Alleyne Memorial Trophy to Anna-Lee as Highest-placed Female Navigator. Dave Lowe was crowned Mud Dogs MudFest Champion, this new contest included in the Prizegiving for the first time.
Rosalind Bradshaw, Michael Hinkson and Mervin Holder were named Most Oustanding Marshals of the Year and presented with trophies donated by Marshall Trading, while another eight volunteers were rewarded in long-standing and rookie marshal categories.
More than 200 competitors, marshals, media and their families attended the occasion, which was held at the Barbados Clay Target Shooting Association Clubhouse at Searles, Christ Church; there was an impressive display of rally cars and Mud Dogs off-roaders in the grounds and the evening’s entertainment also included the launch of the Merville Lynch Productions official DVD of Sol Rally Barbados 2008 and a showing of the coverage filmed by British production house Acceleration TV, which will be aired on Motors TV across Europe next month.
