Good entry for first loose event of the season

More than 30 drivers are on the provisional entry list for Sunday morning's (August 18) first loose-surface event of the Barbados Rally Club's (BRC) 2002 Autozone/LAW Motors Championship at the popular Black Bess venue. And, as a joint promotion with the Motoring Club of Barbados Inc (MCBI), the event looked set to attract yet more entries at Saturday afternoon scrutineering.
Heading the list is Texaco Rally runner-up Roger Mayers in the Automotive Art Ford Escort WRC, who will battle for overall honours with Trevor Manning (Quaker State Mitsubishi Evo V), Richard Roett (Roett's Garage Toyota Celica GT4) and Roger Hill (Nassco Toyota Celica GT4). Returning to action, for the first time in Modified 8, is former Group N Mitsubishi Evo VI runner Jonathan Still, who will campaign Ian Warren's Mitsubishi Galant.
Competition is expected to be tough, as the course has been prepared to perfection for the start of the second half of the motor sport year.
With his regular Subaru Impreza WRC yet to return from its overseas rebuild following his accident on the Texaco, Paul Bourne will drive the Group N Banks/Pirelli Impreza WRX, as team-mate Brian Gill is sidelined through injury; he will face stern competition from Texaco Group N winner and Autozone Group N points-leader Barry Gale and Geoff Noel, both in Mitsubishi Evo VIs.
Lindsay Farmer (Nassco Toyota Starlet Turbo) leads the Open Modified class standings and, in the absence of the injured Cliff Roett, will have Geoffrey Ullyett's flamboyantly-driven Nissan to contend with. In Modified 7, Greg Cozier, who comfortably leads the standings, will share his Ford Escort MkII with former Opel Corsa runner Andrew Jones, their major threat likely to be the experienced John Corbin (Toyota Cololla).
As usual, much attention will focus on the prospect of a close battle in Modified 6, although points-leader Neil Barnard will be forced to sit on the sidelines, the Simpson Motors Opel Corsa suffering an incurable electronics problem. That will leave Sunday's honours to be contested by the likes of former BRC champion Sean Gill (Simpson Motors Suzuki Ignis), Barry Mayers (Automotive Art Toyota Starlet) and Ian Warren (Toyota Starlet).
Recently-crowned Sunbeach RallySprint Champion Roger Marshall heads the entries in Modified 5 in the Photo Finish Toyota Starlet, while Adrian Linton - currently the overall leader of the BRC's Autozone championship - is looking for another good result for the Royal Westmoreland Vauxhall Astra in Production 2 & 3 merged to add to his impressive class win on the Texaco.
