This was the message from Chairman Mark Hamilton as he addressed last night’s (Thursday) Annual General Meeting at the Barbados Clay Target Shooting Association (BCTSA) Clubhouse at Searles, Christ Church.

Strong local entry filling with island winners

Former Champion Driver, now renowned builder of historic Ford Escorts, Dave Jenkins will compete in Sol Rally Barbados for the first time this year, making a rare appearance in a tarmac event, having spent most of his rallying career in the forests. He will drive for the re-branded Weir Rallying UK team, whose leading players, father and son Rob and Ross Weir, already have an enthusiastic following in the Caribbean island built up in previous visits.

“When the flag drops, the talking stops”, a motor sport adage crews competing in Sol Rally Barbados 2018 will be reminded of on Friday, June 1, when they will leave the Ceremonial Start at the Vaucluse Raceway (VRW) and drive straight in to the opening stage on the RallySprint track. It marks the first time that the St Thomas venue – a regular location for rally finishes over the years – has played host to the start.

Sol Rally Barbados is on target for a record turn-out of female competitors when the 29th edition of the Barbados Rally Club’s (BRC) blue riband event is staged later this year. Former British Ladies Rally Champion Shelly Taunt and co-driver Julie Murphy will lead the International contingent, while Cheryl Spencer’s return for a 10th wedding anniversary celebration with co-driving husband Barry means there will be two female drivers on the entry list for only the second time in the event’s history.

Former UK National Rally Champion Paul Bird confirmed today that he will enter Sol Rally Barbados 2018, hot on the heels of scoring maximum points in last Saturday’s (February 17) Visit Conwy Cambrian Rally in the forests of North Wales to take an early lead in the BTRDA Rally Championship. This first big result for ‘Birdy’ and his new ‘wing man’ Jack Morton, the BTRDA Champion Co-driver in 2015 & ’16, bodes well for the new season.

Procter and Bird set to become part of rallying history in April

Following a successful shakedown at the Snetterton Stage Rally in the east of England on Sunday (February 18), Stuart Austin has confirmed that he will compete in Sol Rally Barbados for the third consecutive year. With some performance upgrades to his Accra Beach Hotel and Spa/Austin Powell Ltd/Cancer Research Subaru Impreza and a new co-driver, Austin finished 29th overall and third in class.

Fresh from a class win on Saturday’s (February 10) Jack Neal Memorial Rally at Blyton Park in the UK, former regional Stage Rally Champion Brandon Smith has confirmed he will return this year to compete in Sol Rally Barbados, an event he describes as “magical”. With co-driver Dylan Thomas, he will campaign his BCS Auto Repairs Darrian T9GTR+ in Group B.

Lifetime Achievement Awards recognise members’ contributions

Six decades of motor sport were celebrated on Saturday evening (February 3) when the Barbados Rally Club (BRC) combined its Annual Prizegiving at Mahogany Ridge, St Thomas, with a celebration of its 60th Anniversary, reached in 2017. The outstanding contributions of four long-standing members were rewarded with Lifetime Achievement Awards, while a number of the Club’s commercial partners were also recognised, along with the marshals, medical support teams and the media.

COELHO OPENS SOL RALLY BARBADOS REGIONAL LIST

Vice-President Sealy retires from Barbados Motoring Federation

Former Trinidad & Tobago kart and circuit racing Champion David Coelho is the first regional entry to be confirmed for Sol Rally Barbados 2018. His Subway/Zanzibar/Kaizan Sushi Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX brings to eight the number of four-wheel-drive cars so far listed, with more than 20 expected to appear on the final entry for the Caribbean’s biggest annual motor sport International.

Changes at Barbados Motoring Federation ahead of new season

As the Barbados Motoring Federation (BMF) prepares for this weekend’s start of the 2018 motor sport season, it does so without long-standing Vice-President John Sealy, who has retired. In a heartfelt tribute to the former VP, BMF President Andrew Mallalieu acknowledged that “replacing John with just one person is impossible”, so there will be some changes in the BMF structure.
