Rally Club Championship decider this Sunday
Jamaica’s Kyle Gregg and co-driver Kreigg Yearwood lead the field of 45 cars entered for Sunday’s (October 26) BRC Winter Rally in the Ford Fiesta Rally2 in which they won BCIC Rally Barbados 2025. With its usual enhanced points structure and each driver’s lowest score to be dropped, the deciding round of the Barbados Rally Club (BRC) Driver’s and Class Championships promises island fans an action-packed day to remember.
With 129 points, Kurt Thompson currently leads the Champion Driver title chase in his Modified 4 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX, with Neil Corbin (M2 Toyota GT86 CS-R3) eight points behind in second place.
Gregg is tied for third on 120 points with Edward Corbin (SM1 Daihatsu Charade) and Reigning 2wd Champion Rhett Watson (SM2 BMW M3), but Corbin is the only one of the top five with a zero score to drop following his engine failure in the reverse direction of the Summer Sprint in August, however, so the balance shifts.
Seeded at one in the running order published at last evening’s (Thursday) Briefing Meeting at Mahogany Ridge, St Thomas, Gregg leads a nine-strong FIA R5 entry as a multi-national field also contests the final of the Barbados Rally2 Championship, being scored as a double-header.
The lone WRC class entry of Dane Skeete and Tyler Mayhew (Subaru Impreza WRC S12) is seeded at two, with Jamaica’s Jeff Panton at three, the current leader of the Rally2 Championship partnered in his Fiesta Rally2 by local co-driver Jason Cozier.
Gregg has already put the 4wd Championship out of reach of his rivals, as early leader Stuart Maloney has not competed since retiring from BCIC RB25. Skeete and Panton are locked in a battle for second place, with just one point then separating Josh Read (Fiesta Rally2) and Britain’s Rob Swann (Skoda Fabia Rally2 evo), who start at five and six.
Seeded at four is Adam Mallalieu, at 21 the youngest of the Rally2 field. Following his strong showing at the Motoring Club Barbados Inc (MCBI) double-header two weeks ago, where he finished each direction in the top four, he is joined by British co-driver Max Freeman, fresh from two wins in the last four weeks, co-driving in a Fiesta Rally2 for Sam Touzel in the Tour of Epynt and the Jersey Rally.
Top two-wheel-drive seeds at nine are Barry Mayers, co-driven in his SuperModified 2 Fiesta by Leslie Evanson, with Watson and Andrew Croney starting at 11 and their closest challengers, Nigel Reece and Jason Tull (Toyota Starlet) at 16. The nine-car SM2 entry also includes the debut of Logan Watson’s recently acquired Ford Escort MkII, with fans keen to see how it measures up against the similar car of Andrew Jones.
As always, the season finale will benefit from an enhanced scoring system - 28 points for a win compared with 20, then 23 for second place, 20 for third and so on down to 10 for 10th place – so there is still much to be settled.
Although some class winners are home and dry, others remain to be resolved, with the closest battle set to be among the BimmaCup drivers in Clubman 2, with a new class winner a certainty for the fourth year in a row, joining two-time Champion Chris Hoad (2024, 2021), Ian Warren (2023) and Ryan Wood (2022).
Points leader Hoad is absent, with his own car out after an accident during the recent MCBI event and his go-to replacement needing an engine rebuild. After dropped scores, there’s just 10 points spread across David-Anthony Balgobin, Antigua’s Stewart Gordon and Sebastian Thompson, who won both directions of the BRC Summer Sprint in August.
The BRC Winter Rally comprises nine stages at two venues, starting from the central Service Park at Greenland Agricultural Station in St Andrew. Before the lunch break, there will be three runs from French Village to The Rock (2.7kms), the first at 10.35am, alternating with two from Pickering to Luke Hill (4.00kms); two reverse runs through each stage are scheduled to start with Luke Hill to Pickering at 2.40pm.
