Gregg wins twice in rain-affected BRC Double Header
BCIC RB25 winner Kyle Gregg continued his strong run of results with victory in both directions of the Barbados Rally Club’s (BRC) Summer Sprint on Sunday (August 24). The Jamaican extended his lead in the BRC 4wd Championship and climbed from sixth to equal third in the Champion Driver title chase, with only November’s Winter Rally to go.
A weather system brought bands of heavy rain, creating unpredictable grip levels on the 3.8-kilometre course between Drax Hall and Ellesmere in St George, which was reversed for the afternoon. Hardy fans were entertained by some impressively committed driving as the 40 starters chased two helpings of championship points, revelling in the challenging conditions, with slides and spins aplenty.
The event came to an early close when Jamaican Tarik Minott’s Ford Fiesta Rally2 left the road at Greens, close to the end of the second reverse run towards Drax Hall. The driver and co-driver were uninjured, but work needed to deal with damage from the accident and a looming road re-opening deadline meant it was impractical to continue.
Driving the Fiesta Rally2 in which he won BCIC RB25, Gregg was one of five in the FIA R5 class, with Dane Skeete the lone WRC entry in his Subaru Impreza S12. Josh Read (Fiesta Rally2) was fastest on the first run, as the slippery road surface slowly dried out, his 2m 30.92s roughly 2secs ahead of Gregg. On his first outing in the ex-Sol Esuf Skoda Fabia Rally2 evo, Roger Hill was third, 1sec ahead of Adam Mallallieu (Fiesta R5).
Modified 4 runner Mark Thompson (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX) moved ahead on the second run, lowering the best to 2:26.43, with Rhett Watson second, leading the 2wd charge in his BMW M3, and Mallalieu third. With conditions greatly improved, Gregg punched in a 2:15.28 to lead Mallalieu by more than 4secs on run three, with Skeete now third, then the entire top 10 improved on the final run and shuffled the order.
More than 22s better than on his slippery first run, Gregg won round seven of the BRC Championship with a time of 2:10.92, more than 3s ahead of Skeete and nearly 5s ahead of Mallalieu. Read was fourth and joint BRC Championship leader Kurt Thompson (Evo IX) fifth. After lunch and a further heavy shower, Gregg’s one time (2:18.63) to win round eight before the abandonment was 4s up on Read (2:22.95), with Mallalieu (2:23.77) this time finishing ahead of Skeete (2:26.36), and Minott (2:29.06) fifth.
With his eye on the Barbados Rally2 Championship (Sunday was not a round), Gregg said: “The other boys went to Martinique and got some seat time, so I needed some to keep fresh, because I've been out of it since winning BCIC Rally Barbados. We trialled some new setups and I guess we can say that it worked well in these tricky conditions.”
Mallalieu said: “It was really nice to get some more seat time, and especially good to get practice in tricky conditions. With the weather changing, it was always about trying to figure out which tyre was the best option, and it was great to practice those calls.”
Just five-hundredths of a second separated the top 2wd and SuperModified 2 finishers, Watson winning the first direction from Barry Mayers (Ford Fiesta), then Mayers prevailing on the one reverse run, with Nigel Reece (Toyota Starlet) third both times.
Watson said: “I didn't run wets at all, we knew that at some point we were going to get one dry run at least. Today was supposed to be about some new parts that I'm testing which I didn't get to fully experiment with.” Mayers added: “I was just mainly looking for a little better reliability. We did have a few things to try which we would've preferred it to have been dry and I'm surprised with the wet conditions we got the results we did.”
Finishing fifth and ninth but losing M4 to his brother Mark in the reverse run, Kurt Thompson retained his points lead in the class, also overall. Formerly tied with Thompson, Edward Corbin won SM1 in his Daihatsu Charmant in the first direction but did not start the lone reverse run (the class was won by Roger Jordan in his Starlet) so has dropped to equal third in the Champion Driver standings with Gregg and Watson.
It was a good day for the Thompson family, as Kurt and Mark’s nephew Sebastian (son of Neil) won Clubman 2 in both directions in his BimmaCup, his first class wins since moving from karting to rallying. He said: “Although the event had mixed conditions, I was able to adjust and drive to suit from the first run.”
Thompson’s C2 wins have dented Chris Hoad’s Champion Driver aspirations, with Geoffrey Ullyett, David-Anthony Balgobin and Antigua’s Stewart Gordon also beating him, driving a borrowed car as his has not returned from the Martinique Rallye Tour. He has dropped from third to sixth, but still has an 11-point cushion in the C2 standings.
Voted the unofficial ‘driver of the day’ by many spectators, Mark Huggins won the Open Class in both directions in his ‘Charmonster’, reaching some remarkable angles as he tackled the tricky road surfaces. Robert Ryan Wood (BimmaCup Too) won C3 twice, as did Neil Corbin (Toyota GT86 CS-R3) in M2 and Ian Weekes (Starlet Glanza) in C1, while BMW drivers David St Hill and Michael Worme shared the Modified 3 wins.
