Enhanced points on offer in Sunday’s BRC Winter Rally

Competitors in the 2022 Barbados Rally Club (BRC) Driver’s and Class Championships face their eighth and final challenge of the season this weekend in Sunday’s (October 16) BRC Winter Rally. With around 200 kilometres of competitive motoring already under their belts since the Shakedown Double-Header in April, 10 more special stages in the north of the island will settle the matter with the now-customary enhanced points structure in place for the season finale.
Leaders of the 4wd Championship standings, Dane Skeete and Tyler Mayhew (Subaru Impreza WRC S12) are seeded at number one of 29 cars and the lone entry in WRC in the running order published at last evening’s (Thursday) Briefing Meeting at the Barbados Clay Target Shooting Association Clubhouse, Searles, Christ Church. Stuart Maloney and Kreigg Yearwood start at number two, their Skoda Fabia Rally2 evo the first of nine cars in the FIA R5 class, as drivers continue the hunt for points in the Barbados Motoring Federation-administered R5 Rally Championship presented by First Citizens.
Josh Read and Mark Jordan start at three in their Ford Fiesta R5, with Mark Thompson and Kurt Seabra at four in their Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX, the only car entered in Modified 4, ahead of the remaining R5 cars. These include the Fiestas of overseas visitors Rob Swann from the UK and Turks & Caicos Rally Team members Paul Horton, Stan Hartling and son Ben. Swann and Horton are entered with their regular Welsh co-drivers Darren Garrod and Matt Edwards, who have won two British Rally Championship titles together with Edwards at the wheel,
The morning route will comprise three runs through the 3.6-kilometre Dark Hole stage northbound from Upper Parks to Haggatts – SS1 is scheduled to start at 10.30am – and two through Rock Hall (3.00km) from east to west. After the lunch break, much of the transit route will differ, as Dark Hole will run southbound – SS6 should start at 14.25pm - while Rock Hall will be tackled in the same direction as before. The event, which will be based in the Service Park in Haymans Factory Yard in St Peter, is expected to finish around 5.00pm.
In terms of the Driver’s Championship, the leading contenders are Edward Corbin and Jonathan Alleyne (Daihatsu Charmant) with 113 points, Robert Ryan Wood and Miranda Ho (BimmaCup) with 108 and Jermin Pope/Aaron Kirton (Honda Civic) with 101. Corbin and Pope are separated by 12 points in the fight for Modified 1, while ‘Woody’ has a slightly safer margin of 17 points over Sean Corbin/Emily Kinch in Clubman 2. Both classes are fully subscribed - three or more entries - so all can enjoy the maximum benefit of the 28 points on offer for a class win, with 23 for second and 20 for third.
Highest 2wd seeds, at 12, are Logan Watson and Barry Ward (BMW M3), current leaders of the 2wd Championship and the Modified 3 class; with no entries in SuperModified 2 on Sunday, there are sure to be some changes in the 2wd standings, where three of the top six positions are held by SM2 regulars Andrew Jones and brothers Roger and Barry Mayers.
