Three Driver Challenges, as crews drive from day into night

With a new title sponsor, three Driver Challenges and the biggest entry for more than two years, Saturday’s (September 14) third round of the Barbados Rally Club’s (BRC) 2019 Chefette MudDogs Safari Championship promises to be a tough one for the crews and an entertaining one for spectators. The Super-S Lubricants September Safari will also run from day into night, adding extra spice to the competition.

MudDogs Chairman Ricky Holder is in upbeat mood: “I’m really pleased to welcome a new title sponsor to the MudDogs family, Super-S Lubricants, thanks to the local agent, KG Enterprises. The company has already been supporting us in other ways by supplying trophies, but they are putting a real effort behind this event, including having the start right outside their premises.

“And the increase in interest is really encouraging, too. It is the best entry we have seen since the Sol 60th Anniversary Safari in 2017, and with some familiar names from the rallying world on the list. There’s a good entry in both classes, so we should have a great time, particularly as the event runs in to the night. We’re hoping for a good spectator turnout at the Driver Challenges, which are easily accessible.”

The route has been set by Ben Norris and Kirk Watkins, who added their names to the Rally Club’s Roll of Honour with victory in this year’s Shelbury Construction June Safari in their Toyota Land Cruiser. The first crew will leave the Belle Estate Yard, St Michael, at 2.01pm on Saturday, heading almost immediately in to the first of the three Driver Challenges, to the west of the Norman A Niles roundabout. On their way to the 6.00pm Dinner Halt at Rubis Kirtons in St Philip, crews will tackle the second Driver Challenge in the Chancery Lane swamp, around an hour before. The second route will carry the crews back to St Michael, with the third Driver Challenge at the earlier location near the Norman A Niles roundabout at approximately 11:00pm, shortly before the finish.

Leslie Alleyne and Navigator Chris O’Neal (Simpson Motors/Shell Spirax/Shell Rimula/Maxxis Isuzu D-Max) are currently leading the MudDogs standings, with two of the four rounds run; they have a two-point cushion to Norris and Watkins, with David Armstrong and Andrew Croney (Nassco Toyota Hilux) third, a further four points behind.

While Norris and Watkins will automatically match their best result (60 points for first) as route-setters for Saturday’s event, Alleyne/O’Neal and Armstrong/Croney will have to rely on their wits and ability to beat the opposition to rack up the points. With crews such as Chris Armstrong/Wayne Clarke (Toyota Hilux), Willie Hinds/Wayne Manning (Black Bess Group Suzuki Samurai), Stephen Mayers/David Reece (Hilux) and Phillip McConney/Mark Western (HVAC Caribbean Land Rover Defender), there is competition aplenty.

In Class B, KG Enterprises Managing Director Julian Goddard and Navigator Stuart McChlery will carry the colours of Super-S Lubricants on their Isuzu D-Max, with the competition including MudDogs regulars Richard Hinckson/Kevin-Jon Manning (WindForce Tyres Samurai), Barbados Motoring Federation (BMF) President Andrew Mallalieu and his son Alexander (Hilux) and rallyists Andrew Skeete/Eric Allamby in a Rent Equip-sponsored Hilux.
