SOL RALLY BARBADOS 2018 At-a-glance & Provisional Entry List

New for 2018

• the Ceremonial Start on Friday, June 2 (6.30pm) moves to the Vaucluse Raceway and, this year, it will lead straight in to the first timed stage . . . immediately! Cars will run in reverse order of seeding, side-by-side in pairs; each crew will be interviewed on the Ceremonial Start ramp to the south of the startline, before moving forward to tackle two laps of the RallySprint track, a distance of 5.80kms. It is a challenging start to the event, as was demonstrated during last year’s BRC Winter Rally, and requires real concentration

• ‘proper' night stages are back! On Saturday night, a four-stage loop after the dinner halt will use two stage venues that are close together, so should run quickly and efficiently. These have been timed to allow a reasonably early night for crews, despite the number of Saturday stages rising to 13 for the first time since 2011

• with slightly longer stages, the final day looks set to be more challenging than in the recent past, with the contrast between Saturday’s short and bumpier stages and Sunday’s long and faster stages even more pronounced than usual. Malvern returns to Gutter Road and Redland, while Kendal includes the Ellesmere component, which has not been used for several years; both these variations are technically more challenging, particularly Ellesmere, slow and narrow in contrast to the rest of the stage, which is very fast and open. And it comes right at the end of the stage . . .

• as the Barbados Rally Club (BRC) maintains its focus on safety, the Official Vehicle convoy which passes through each special stage before the first car is due has been extended, with the addition of a second ‘Zero Car’. The sequence will be:

Safety – this vehicle checks to ensure that Safety Plans have been adhered to, marshals are in place and spectators are standing in safe places. It carries the BRC Safety Officer and the Barbados Motoring Federation’s (BMF) Safety Officer

Car 000 – a final check that spectators have not moved from safe areas; if they have and refuse to move back, the stage will be delayed

Car 00 – travelling at competition speed, this car indicates that the stage is ‘live’. Trevor Manning will drive his Mitsubishi Lancer Turbo, with son Sam as co-driver

Car 0 – travelling at competition speed, this car reinforces the message of Car 00 that the stage is live. Ryan Wood will drive his BMW 318ti Compact, with Michael Franco as co-driver

• the Rally Show on Saturday, May 26, moves to the Banks Facility at Wildey, with extended opening hours from 1.00 to 6.00pm. It will once again provide island fans with unrivalled access to local, regional and international competitors, with all the cars entered in Sol RB18 on display. Building on the experience of last year, the Show promises to be bigger and better, with a broad cross-section of local companies represented, both corporate and small businesses, along with a variety of food and beverage stalls. There will be entertainment for all the family, driver interviews on the Main Stage and a Mega Autograph Signing Session (MASS). Further details will be announced in the coming weeks
