BRC NOVEMBER SAFARI SUNDAY

Championship leaders Leslie and Annalee Alleyne will start at number 1 for this Sunday’s (November 12) final round of the 2006 Barbados Rally Club (BRC) Safari Championship; by the close of last night’s (Tuesday) briefing meeting, 21 crews had entered, with more anticipated by the Thursday 5.00pm deadline.
The BRC November Safari will start at 8.00am from the car park of Advanced Business Systems in the Warrens Industrial Park, St Michael. Visiting every parish except St Lucy, the event will cover around 140 kilometres, divided into two routes.
There will be a stop-over of about one hour’s duration at approximately 1.00pm at Sand Dunes Restaurant on the Ermy Bourne Highway, with the first crew expected to reach the finish at the Kendal Sporting Club in St Philip at 4.00pm.
Second place in the Toyo Tires BRC February Safari in their former Suzuki Samurai, followed by victories in both the Toyota BRC June Safari and the BRC August Safari in the Bridgestone Tyres/Barbados Muffler Centre/Autozone Inc Mitsubishi iO, have given Leslie and Annalee the edge in the championship standings: among the Navigators, Annalee leads Andrew Croney by 12 points, with Geoff Goddard another 12 behind in third place; of the Drivers, Leslie is 24 ahead of Audley Croney, with Ian Warren third, four points behind Croney.
But the husband and wife partnership will still need to stay on top of their game, as they face a quality entry this Sunday, including the 2005 Champion Navigator and Driver, Neil Barnard and Barry Gale in the Gales Hatcheries/Nishikoi Fish Foods Mitsubishi L200. Barnard and Gale sat out the August Safari, as they had been route-setters, and are looking forward to the challenge of competing once again.
A strong challenge is also expected from brothers Ian and Robert Warren, both seasoned competitors on navigational events, in the Simpson Motors/GWA Survey Supplies Isuzu Pickup.
Once again, there is a healthy entry in the Novice section – nearly half the 21 crews so far listed; among the drivers, early-season points-leaders Sean Mottley (Suzuki Vitara) has now dropped behind Chris Choat Jnr in the Ontrac Systems/Ace Engineering/Freemotion Range Rover Special, while Andrew Croney comfortably leads the Novices from Kreigg Yearwood, who has sat with Mottley this year.
The bulk of this weekend’s route was set by Willie Hinds, who finished fifth in this year’s June Safari with John Sealy in his Land Rover; the final section of the route was set by Warren Gollop.
