Crucial points up for grabs in BRC Double-Header

With two points-scoring opportunities, the Barbados Rally Club’s (BRC) Double-Header Summer Sprint on Sunday (August 24) will be crucial for success in the 2025 BRC Driver’s & Class Championships. As the season draws to a close, with November’s Winter Rally the ninth and final round, Sunday will play a key role in the outcome of the chase for the Champion Driver title, also for victory in the 10 contested classes.

Round seven will comprise four timed runs on a 3.8-kilometre course starting at Drax Hall in St George, passing through Woodland and Todds to finish at Ellesmere, with four runs in the reverse direction constituting round eight. The fastest run in each direction counts towards the driver’s championship tally, with a class win worth 15 points.

Forty-four drivers are listed on the running order published today (Friday), three more than last year, with BCIC RB25 winner and BRC 4wd Championship leader, Jamaica’s Kyle Gregg, heading a five-car FIA R5 entry in his Ford Fiesta Rally2. He will face the similar car of Josh Read, also the Fiesta R5 of Adam Mallalieu, who finished third and sixth respectively in BCIC RB25.

Roger Hill will compete for the first time in his ex-Suleman Esuf Skoda Fabia Rally2 evo, while Jamaican Tarik Minott (Fiesta Rally2) completes the class. Hill, Mallalieu, Minott and Read are certain to progress in the 4wd standings, with Stuart Maloney, brother Mark, Jamaica’s Jeff Panton and Britain’s Rob Swann all absent.

In the BRC Champion Driver title chase, Gregg currently lies sixth with 90 points, just 11 behind Kurt Thompson (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX) and two-time Champion Edward Corbin (Daihatsu Charade), who share the lead with 101 from a perfect score of six class wins in Modified 4 and SuperModified 1 respectively.

Just five points behind them is Clubman 2 leader Chris Hoad (BimmaCup), who has narrowly missed out on the Champion Driver title twice before, losing in a tie-break to Stuart Maloney in 2021, then finishing third last year. Two more double champions, Neil Corbin (M1 Toyota GT86 CS-R3) and Rhett Watson (SM2 BMW M3) also have scores in the 90s, so this weekend is crucial to staying in the fight.

Watson has led the 2wd Championship since the start of the year and maintained his advantage after First Citizens King of the Hill and BCIC RB25, despite being beaten by Barry Mayers (SM2 Ford Fiesta) in KotH and his brother Roger (SM2 Toyota WR Starlet) on both days of RB25. The M&M Racing Fiesta is in action this weekend, Mayers and Watson the top two 2wd seeds, but not the Starlet, as Roger fell foul of the holiday season when trying to get his engine tuned following a post-RB25 rebuild.

With 82 points, Watson has a good cushion over second-placed Neil Corbin (69pts), who has Nigel Reece (SM2 Starlet) and Andrew Jones (SM2 Ford Escort MkII) just a handful of points behind.

Sunday’s Service Park is at Colleton Plantation Yard, St John, where scrutineering will start at 9.00am and a Briefing Meeting will be held ahead of the 11.00am start. There will be the usual break after the first four runs to allow the stage crews to prepare for the reverse direction, with the event expected to be completed by 5.00pm.
