REGIONAL FIRE & SECURITY SAFARI STARTS 22 CREWS

As competitors make their final preparations for this weekend’s Regional Fire & Security September Safari (Sunday, September 5), increasingly unpredictable weather patterns around the island suggest that the 22 crews will face a challenging event.
The fourth round of the Barbados Rally Club’s (BRC) Mud Dogs Safari Championship will start from Belle, St Michael, at 8.01am; the stopover at the end of route one will be at Chapel Plantation, St Philip, with the finish – scheduled for approximately 5.00pm – at the Barbados Clay Target Shooting Association (BCTSA) Club House at Searles, Christ Church.
Each of this year’s previous three safaris has produced a different winning crew: in the Armag March Safari, it was Dustin Edwards and Ryan Corbin (Blockman/Corbin’s Catering Services/Mahogany Ridge/Crane & Equipment/SDRR Hydraulic & Industrial Spares Toyota Hilux); in the Chefette April Safari, Neil Barnard and Barry Gale (Huzier/Mahindra Motorsports/redlinefuels.com Mahindra Pik-Up) levelled the score.
Experienced veterans Chris Armstrong and Wayne Clarke (Toyota Hilux) won the Shelbury Construction June Safari, Clarke becoming the first competitor to win the island’s longest-standing event five times, while it was the crew’s third victory together.
Armstrong and Clarke won the Regional Fire & Security September Safari last year, so might consider this a good omen, but no-one must forget the reigning Mud Dogs Champion Driver and Navigator, Darrin White and Robert Warren (Lucky Locks/Rockstar Nissan Frontier), who are yet to prevail this year.
The 22 crews entered on Sunday include nine in the Novice Class, where competition this year has been every bit as intense as in the Pro Class.
Route setters for the season’s penultimate Safari are Dominic Brooker and Stephen Dear, winners of the Armag March Safari last year and runner-up Navigator and Driver respectively in the 2009 Mud Dogs Safari Championship; they have been helped by Peter Bradshaw, while the re-checkers have been Leslie Alleyne and Chris Oneal. The navigation will be a mixture of the BRC and tulip systems.
