SHELBURY CONSTRUCTION JUNE SAFARI DRAWS NEAR

The 54th running of the longest-established motor sport event in the Caribbean draws near, as competitors in the Barbados Rally Club’s (BRC) Mud Dogs Safari Championship prepare for the highlight of their season, the Shelbury Construction June Safari, which will run through the night of Saturday to Sunday, June 26/27.
The first crew will leave the start at Maynards Plantation, St Peter, at 3.01pm for the first of three routes; the dinner stop is slated for approximately 8.00pm at Andrews Factory, St Joseph, with a further rest stop in Maynards, St Peter at around 2.00am. The finish will be at roughly 7.00am on Sunday at Mahogany Ridge, Plum Tree Hill, St Thomas, where breakfast will be available.
The setting of this year’s event has been shared between Ryan Corbin and Dustin Edwards, joint leaders respectively of the Navigator and Driver standings in the Mud Dogs Championship, and Derek Edwards/Damien Brooker, who currently lie fourth. From a navigational perspective, the event will be primarily Tulip, with some BRC and a little straight-line.
The setters have also enjoyed some valuable guidance from BRC Vice-President David Edwards – as navigator to Roger Manning, Edwards won ‘The June’ three times in eight years between 1981 and ’88, and had previously shown his navigational expertise as route-setter in the 1970s.
To help crews sharpen their technique, a Practice Safari has been organised for this Sunday (June 20). It will start from the Barbados Clay Target Shooting Association Club House at Searles, Christ Church – entrants are asked to arrive by 8.00am for a 9.00am start; the short practice event will finish at the Popular Shop in Martin’s Bay, St John, at approximately 11.30am. The entry fee is $10.00 per person, with a maximum of four people per vehicle; entries will be taken at the start.
Mud Dogs Chairman Leslie Alleyne said: “We are very pleased to be able to hold a Practice Safari, which has been arranged by Renata Roett, with help from Noel Edwards, so thanks are due to them. The route is Tulip, with a little BRC - having checked it back, I can say that it will be a good platform for those people interested in learning or sharpening their technique for ‘The June’.
“We appreciate that this will be held on Father's Day, but there was no other occasion suitable for holding the event. We have set the time for the event to hopefully allow those fathers who have family engagements to be able to get to them at a decent time. For those folks that do not have any other engagements there will be food and, of course, drinks on sale at Martins Bay.”
Entries for the Shelbury Construction June Safari are now open at Motorsport Services, Haggatt Hall, St Michael, and will close at 2.00pm next Tuesday (June 22); the Briefing Meeting will be held at 7.00pm the same evening at the Barbados Clay Target Shooting Association Club House at Searles, Christ Church.
Alleyne concluded: “Everyone is really looking forward to what promises to be the Safari of the year, and a special thanks goes out to Chris Armstrong and Shelbury Construction for their continued support in 2010. I am told it will include two driver challenges, details of which will come later.”
