THIRTY CREWS GO FOR ‘JUNE’ GLORY

Thirty crews are listed on the final entry for this weekend’s (June 28/29) Shelbury Construction June Safari, chasing glory in the region’s longest-running motor sport event . . . but victory in the second round of the 2008 Barbados Rally Club (BRC) Mud Dogs Safari Championship will not be easy.
Once again, the event which helped establish the BRC in 1957 promises a true challenge of man and machine. The entry list includes seven former winners, two of whom – Leslie Alleyne and Derek Gill – have won as both driver and navigator.
The first crew will leave the start at the ITC building at Warrens at 2.01pm on Saturday, facing a challenging nine-hour route, with a stopover at the Sand Dunes restaurant at approximately 6.00pm. The Sunday morning restart from Searles, Christ Church, is slated for 8.01am – the event will end with a spectator challenge in the Searles Factory Yard starting at around 12.30pm, followed by a social.
Chairman of the BRC Mud Dogs sub-committee, Alleyne noted: “Word from the route setters, Darrin White and Robert Warren, is that the routes will provide some challenging terrain, especially in the north of the island. If the rain should fall heavily before the weekend, we could be in for a real trial of man and machine.
“Navigationally, it is also said to be quite tricky at times. Even the route re-checker, Kenny Croney, who is a very experienced competitor, was out-foxed on a couple of occasions. Having said that, though, great care has been taken to ensure that the less experienced competitors are not left lost for extensive periods after making a mistake. We are aiming to ensure that all competitors gain an optimum level of enjoyment and satisfaction from the event.”
The most successful previous winner of ‘The June’ who will be competing this year is four-times winning navigator Wayne Clarke; he has uniquely won the event twice each in the rally car and four-wheel-drive eras. His first two victories (1991 & ’93) came with Don Hunte in a Hyundai Excel saloon, the second pair (2000 & ‘01) with Chris Armstrong in an Isuzu Pickup. This weekend, he and event sponsor Armstrong are entered in a Suzuki Samurai.
Alleyne added: “I must give special thanks to Shelbury Construction for its generous support. Thanks to that sponsorship we have been able to give competitors shirts and hats, then a complimentary meal on Saturday at the stopover at Sand Dunes Restaurant, also refreshments at the finish.”
The Prizegiving for the Shelbury Construction June Safari will be held at the BCTSA Clubhouse next Tuesday (July 1) at 7.00pm, once results have been made official.
