McCONNEY AND MOSELEY WIN JUNE SAFARI

Navigator Tyrone Moseley added his name to the list of 63 previous winners of the region’s oldest motor sport event on Sunday (June 10), when he and driver Philip McConney – winning ‘the June’ for the second time – emerged victorious in the Esso Courtesy Garage 50th Anniversary June Safari, the last event in the Barbados Rally Club’s (BRC) month of celebrations marking its half-century.
In their vivid green Suzuki Vitara, they amassed a total of 2152 penalties, giving them a winning margin of 273 penalties over Roger Hill and Geoffrey Goddard (Nassco Ltd Toyota Hilux); third, with just 60 more penalties, were Andrew Mallalieu and Sean Gill (Simpson Motors/The Boatyard Isuzu D-Max).
These three crews also claimed the Veterans Awards, although four-time winners of the June Rally Mallalieu and Gill immediately handed theirs on to Kirk and Tricia King (Suzuki Samurai); Mallalieu told the crowd of more than 200 gathered for the prize-giving at Surfer's Bay Beach Bar, Christ Church: “Without their assistance when we were stuck up, we wouldn’t be here.”
As navigator to drivers including Goddard and Michael Corbin in the 1980s, former BRC committee member ‘Tee-Mose’ had regularly finished in the top five of the June Rally – his best result was second with Corbin in 1985 – and he was delighted to win. He said: “It was a very well-set event and a challenging one; we had a really enjoyable weekend - thanks to the organisers and marshals.”
The trophies were presented by Cally Boyea, country manager Eastern Caribbean for Esso, the first title sponsor of the June Rally in 1965 renewing its association with the Club. Boyea commended the BRC on a professionally-run event, also on its apparent control of the weather, the heavy rains of late last week having made the event more challenging and enjoyable for competitors.
Hill and Goddard were in the lead after Saturday’s first route, which started from Courtesy Garage, Wildey and finished at Esso, Paynes Bay, St James; Doug Armstrong and former Champion Novice Navigator Warren Gollop were second, and McConney and Moseley third. That route claimed a couple of early scalps - potential front-runners, 1987 winners David Barnard and Kevyn Yearwood (McEnearney Quality Inc Ford Ranger), also Stewart Gill and Bruce Wilkie (Suzuki Samurai) – and also produced a noteworthy performance from novices Sean Mottley and Kreigg Yearwood (Suzuki Vitara), who were sixth overall, ahead of many more experienced crews.
In an impressive display, Paul Marshall and last-minute replacement navigator Ricky Holder (Mitsubishi L200) won Sunday’s first route from Fisherpond Plantation Yard to Emerald City, St Philip. Mallalieu and Gill were second, with Derek Gill/Andrew Croney (Insurance Solutions Inc Mitsubishi Pajero), third. Although only fifth on this route, McConney and Moseley now edged into the lead of what had become a close-fought event, with fewer than 100 penalties spread across the top four crews at lunch: the leaders were just 30 points ahead of Hill/Goddard, with Mallalieu/Gill and Ian and Robert Warren (Simpson Motors Isuzu Pickup) close behind. Two consistent routes had promoted 1976 and ’87 June Rally winner John Sealy and Lisa Roett (Land Rover Defender) to fifth.
Gill and Croney won the final route to finish the weekend fifth, while McConney and Moseley consolidated their victory, second on the route; Chris Armstrong and four-time winning navigator Wayne Clarke were third in the Shelbury Construction Suzuki Samurai, but a rear suspension collapse on Saturday meant a good overall finish was out of the question.
Sixteenth overnight after a disappointing first route, Brett Barber/Warrick Eastmond (Autozone Inc/Biddy's Information Centre Daihatsu Feroza) fought back on Sunday - fourth on routes two and three, they finished seventh.
The highest-placed novices on routes two and three were Hadley Green/Jeremy Croney (Hunte's Auto Spares/Stingray Car Rentals Toyota Hilux), finishing 12th and eighth overall respectively; their efforts were in vain, though, as the margin built up by Mottley and Yearwood on route one meant it was they who collected the Novice Awards, presented on behalf of Neptune Tours by Richard Daniel.
The final presentation of the evening was made by joint (with Robin Hinds) route-setter Leslie Alleyne of AutoZone, which will pay the entry fee and insurance for the next round of the BRC Safari Championship on Sunday, August 26, for the winners of the Sportsmanship Award – to a resounding cheer from the crowd, this was presented to Rodney Mason and Wendell Skeete, who more than once used the power and traction of the Rodney's Trucking Mitsubishi Pajero to come to the aid of their fellow-competitors.
