McCONNEY AND CRONEY WIN JUNE SAFARI

Philip McConney and Kenny Croney in their Suzuki Samurai defeated all-comers - and the elements - to claim victory in last Saturday's 4 x 4 June Safari, the second round of the Barbados Rally Club’s (BRC) Ruf 'n' Tuf Navigational Championship, sponsored by Barbados Industries Ltd.
At the end of a demanding route, one section of which had to be cancelled as the hill had been rendered impassable by heavy rain, McConney and Croney had a total of 1500 penalties. Second were David Stoute and Robin Hinds, who collected 3200 penalties in their Toyota Hilux.
Just 200 penalties behind them in third place were Justin Cuke and teenager Jeremy Croney (Suzuki Samurai), in an impressive performance, which also won them the trophy as highest-placed Novice crew, donated by Neptune Tours. The closest Novice crew were Chris Beckley and Warren Gollop (Mitsubishi Pajero), who finished 13th overall, with 10,000 penalties.
Thirty crews contested the BRC 4 x 4 June Safari, which was the 47th running of what was formerly known as the June Rally, which makes it the oldest organised motor sport event in Barbados . . . possibly even in the Caribbean.
Last year’s winning crew, husband and wife team Leslie and Annalee Alleyne (AutoZone Inc/Amalie Motor Oil/Quality Tyre Mazda B2500TDi), finished fourth overall and third among the Pro Group, while Annalee also claimed the trophy for highest-placed female co-driver, donated by Biddy Barber.
Peter Bradshaw, joint winner with Ian Warren of the June Safari the previous year, finished fifth overall in his Land Rover Series III, with Chris O’Neal navigating, while Warren (Isuzu Pickup) finished 11th with brother Robert sitting alongside. Championship sponsor Mark Sabga and navigator Peter Wilkie (Billy Boy/Ruf 'n' Tuf/Romaro Uniform Centre Kia Sportage) finished seventh.
Biddy Barber's trophy for the highest-placed female driver was claimed by Keri-Dawn Watkins, who finished 14th overall in her Hankook Tyres-supported Toyota RAV4, with Lisa Roett navigating.
The BRC 4 x 4 June Safari started from Black Bess Quarry in St Peter, and finished at the Vaucluse Raceway in St Thomas; there were two routes, with a stop-over between; competitors travelled through the parishes of St Peter, St George, St Philip, St Joseph and St Andrew.
