ALLEYNE FAMILY CLAIM JUNE SAFARI

Husband and wife team Leslie and Annalee Alleyne added their names to the roll of honour of the island’s oldest motor sport event on Saturday (June 28), with victory in the Barbados Rally Club’s (BRC) June Safari; Timmy Mahon and Kirk Watkins finished equal third overall to win the event’s Novice Group.
Driving the Autozone/CITGO Mazda B2500, the Alleynes completed the two routes with only 100 penalties, beating another family crew – Biddy Barber and son Brett – into second place; they had collected 300 penalties in the Biddy’s Visitors Information Daihatsu Feroza.
Mahon and Watkins had 400 penalties in their Isuzu Pickup and tied for third overall with the Kumho Tyres Toyota Hilux of father and son team Stephen and Roger Mayers, who had won the BRC’s first Navigational Test of the season – beating the Alleynes into second place – back in March.
Twenty-six four-wheel-drive vehicles completed the 46th running of the island’s longest-running motor sport event, which was staged first in 1957 when it was known as the June Rally; this year’s challenging routes were set by Lindsay Farmer and Rob Warren, who had been a co-winner of the 2002 event, navigating for his brother Ian.
Co-organiser Farmer said: “I would like to thank the marshals for devoting their Saturday to sitting in the middle of nowhere; their help was invaluable. Also, to all the competitors, thanks for entering the event. Rob Warren and I were really heartened by the numbers who came out for it, and it definitely made all our hard work worth it. I hope they all had a good, yet challenging, time, and will consider entering the next event in November.”
Trophies were awarded to the top three crews overall, the highest-placed Female Team and the highest-placed Novice Group crew; there were also trophies for the winners of Route 1 and Route 2 in each of the Novice Group and Pro Group.
The highest-placed female team, Keri-Dawn Watkins and Lisa Roett won a trophy and gift set from the SOMA store in Sheraton, donated by Sophie Warren; the overall winners, Leslie and Annalee Alleyne, claimed a trophy and dinner for two on the Harbour Master (donated by Tall Ships); other placed crews collected Gift Vouchers donated by Carters General Stores, movie passes to Olympus Theatres and gallons of Lubriguard Oil (donated by KG Enterprises).
