SAFARI SEASON APPROACHES CONCLUSION

With just one event to run, Leslie and Annalee Alleyne remain at the head of the points standings in the 2006 Barbados Rally Club (BRC) Safari Championship; the last of the four rounds is slated for Sunday, November 12, and a worthy finale to a highly-competitive season is widely anticipated.
Having finished second in the Toyo Tires BRC February Safari in their former Suzuki Samurai, the husband and wife crew won both the demanding Toyota BRC June Safari and then the rather more entertaining BRC August Safari in their Autozone/Quality Tyre/Barbados Muffler Centre Mitsubishi iO.
These three strong performances have given them a total of 178 points - Annalee leads the Navigators title chase by 12 points from Andrew Croney, while Leslie’s advantage in the Driver’s Championship is twice that – he leads Audley Croney by 24 points.
Andrew Croney has powered his way up the points table, thanks to being one of the route-setters for the June Safari – route-setters are rewarded with a total equal to their best score in the other rounds, and his third place in the August Safari navigating for Justin Cuke did his championship aspirations a power of good. Not only is he now second overall, but has a comfortable margin in the Novice Navigator’s standings, too.
Third in the Navigator’s Championship is the experienced Geoffrey Goddard, who has finished all three rounds in the top six, sitting alongside Audley Croney in his Suzuki Samurai. Goddard’s closest threat is another experienced navigational expert, Robert Warren, who is just four points behind.
Warren navigates for brother Ian in the Simpson Motors Isuzu Pickup - he is third in the Driver’s Championship standings, the same four points behind Audley Croney. Paul Marshall and Ian Hutson (Mitsubishi L200) have 144 points each, placing them respectively fourth and fifth in the driver and navigator standings.
The highest-placed Novice Driver is Chris Choat Jnr; he is fifth overall in his mighty ACE Recovery/ONTRAC Fleet Management Range Rover Special.
The bulk of the route for the BRC November Safari has been set by Willie Hinds; perhaps best known as Wayne Manning’s long-standing rally co-driver in Ford Escort and Peugeot 205XS, Hinds enjoyed a very successful outing on this year’s June Safari, in which he finished fifth, navigating in John Sealy’s Land Rover.
The final section of the route has been set by Warren Gollop, winner of last year’s August Safari, navigating for Chris Beckley in his Mitsubishi Pajero. According to Gollop, the season’s final event promises to be a challenge: “The rally will start at Advanced Business Systems in Warrens and will finish at Kendall Sporting. I do not have the total mileage yet, but the rally touches every parish, with the exception of St. Lucy! With some light rain, as we are seeing now, it should be a very muddy – and - fun rally.”
