STRONG ENTRY FOR SUNDAY NAVIGATIONAL EVENT

Twenty-four crews entered for the third round of the Barbados Rally Club’s (BRC) Ruf 'n' Tuf Navigational Championship, sponsored by Barbados Industries Ltd, at the briefing meeting on Wednesday evening. The event is slated for this Sunday (September 26), with an 8.00am start in Speightstown, St Peter.
The first route will take crews through the areas of Orange Hill, Black Bess, Turners Hall, Cherry Tree Hill, River Bay and Lamberts before the lunch stop at Sand Dunes Restaurant on the Ermy Bourne Highway at around 12:30pm. The second route, which is scheduled to start at 1:30pm, will pass through Belleplaine, Lakes, Chalky Mount, Saddleback, Horse Hill, Four Roads and Halton, before finishing at Kendal Sporting in St Philip at around 5:30pm.
With two of the four rounds run, this new BRC championship is proving popular with competitors, and a tough battle will be fought for both navigators and drivers titles. Currently, Kenney Croney leads the former with 30 points, chased by Annalee Aleyne (23pts) and Jason Downey (22pts), while Derek Gill is the leading driver, on 40 points, ahead of Philip McConney (30pts) and Leslie Alleyne (23pts). All are on the entry list for Sunday, so an exiting competition is in prospect.
In addition to the awards on offer in each round of the championship, there will an extra prize presented on Sunday, to the crew voted by other competitors to have shown the most ‘sportsmanship’.
BRC committee member Lindsay Farmer said: “The last page of each set of route instructions will have a ballot attached; each crew will be asked to enter their own competition number, plus the names or competition number of the crew they deem to be the most fitting to receive the award . . . and a brief reason why.
“We are looking to reward people who sacrifice their own overall position to assist others, whether by helping to tow someone out when they are stuck, or stopping either to put someone back on route, or to explain something in the navigation. We have done this to help promote the spirit of camaraderie that already exists in this form of motor sport, and reward and recognise those who offer assistance.”
For Sunday’s event. the prize has been donated by Leslie and Annalee Alleyne of AutoZone. Both driver and navigator of the winning crew will win a free service and engine oil and filter change valued at $138 each.
The final round of the Ruf 'n' Tuf Navigational Championship is on Sunday, November 7, and is being set by Geoffrey Goddard and Doug Armstrong.
