BOURNE, READ & STILL THE BIG WINNERS

More than 70 members of the island’s motor sport fraternity were honoured on Friday evening (November 23) at the Barbados Rally Club’s (BRC) Annual Prizegiving, which brought the curtain down on the Club’s 50th Anniversary season. Among the awardees were marshals, whose voluntary contribution to the sport is of such vital importance.
Paul Bourne and Stuart Maloney were crowned Texaco BRC Rally Champions, while Bourne also collected trophies as winner of Modified 8-WRC and fourth overall in the Virgin Atlantic BRC Driver’s Championship. Josh Read’s reward for claiming the Overall Driver’s Championship and beating all-comers in SuperModified 9 was a pair of Upper Class return tickets to London, handed over by Virgin Atlantic’s marketing manager Rachel Pilgrim. Robin Hinds and Mark Western also received their trophies as Champion Navigator and Driver respectively in the BRC Safari Championship.
At the end of his most successful season yet, Jonathan Still was a popular choice to receive the coveted Richard Roett Memorial Trophy in addition to his awards for a fourth consecutive Group win in the Driver’s Championship and highest-placed two-wheel-drive car in the Rally Championship; he also finished third overall in both championships. Neil Barnard and Barry Gale won awards in all three of the Club’s championships; in addition to trophies for their rallying exploits in the Texaco and Virgin Atlantic series, Barnard and Gale finished third driver and navigator respectively in the Safari Championship.
Gilbert Kellman and Ricardo Patrick were named Stage Marshals of the Year and presented with commemorative clocks donated by Marshall Trading, while another nine volunteers were rewarded in outstanding, long-service and rookie marshal categories.
More than 200 competitors, marshals, media and their families attended the occasion, which was held at the BCTSA Clubhouse at Searles, Christchurch.
