BOURNE LOOKING FOR SUCCESS IN ‘HOME’ EVENT

Paul Bourne in the Warrens Motors/Plus Subaru Impreza WRC heads the entry list for the Barbados Rally Club’s (BRC) Summer Nights Tarmac Sprint, to be contested on Saturday evening (July 29) at Cliff in St John . . . a speed event happening literally on his doorstep.
Eight Group winners from last month’s Rally Barbados 2006 are also listed among more than 20 entries received by mid-day Thursday; with entries not closing until that evening, and a late entry facility open until 5.00pm Friday, organisers were confident of a good turn-out.
The weekend event is slated for a 6.30pm start, with competitors due to arrive for scrutineering by 5.00pm. The start and scrutineering location will be in Featherbed Lane, the course then passing through Cliff Plantation, turning east and passing Guinea before the finish.
Having come so close this year to winning Rally Barbados for a second time, Bourne is keen to do well on Saturday; the challenge is led by Roger Hill (Mobil 1/Nassco Ltd/Motormac/PPG Toyota Celica GT4) and Barry Gale (Dentyne Ice/Simpson Motors/Nishikoi Fish Foods Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI).
Hill claimed his fourth consecutive Modified 8 Group win on RB’06, but was seen off during Sunday’s stages by Gale, who had been hobbled by a turbo problem during Saturday. Also in the four-wheel-drive mix is Kirk Watkins in the Abacus Builders Inc/Planned Maintenance/Aqua Pur Mitsubishi Lancer Evo V.
Whether it will be four-wheel-drive cars that fill all the top spots, however, is a big question, with Roger Skeete also entered. Driving the Havoline/Michelin/FB Batteries Peugeot 306 Maxi, The Sheriff beat all-comers in the Motoring Club of Barbados Inc’s speed event at Diamond Corner two weeks ago – Hill and Gale included - and will be hoping for more of the same. Equally, the four-wheel-drivers will be out to settle the score.
Fresh from his fifth place overall and Group win on RB’06, Jonathan Still will also be aiming to turn on the magic once again in the Hitachi Power Tools/Philips Lighting/Warrens Motors/Crane & Equipment/VP Racing BMW M3. In terms of Modified Open in the BRC Driver’s Championship, he is on equal points with Mark Hamilton (Consolidated Finance/McEnearney Quality Inc Ford Escort MkII), so a good battle is guaranteed.
The provisional entry list already includes a number of firm favourites with the fans – in the rear-wheel-drive corner, these include the Unknown Entity/New Media Advertising/Makita Power Tools/NF Nitrous Booster/Kumho Tyres Ford Escort MkI of the popular Watson brothers, Rhett and Logan, who are also local to the venue, Josh Read (Automotive Art/Baram Services/Forever Flowers/D Blades Trophies Ltd Toyota Starlet) and Andrew Jones (McEnearney Quality Inc/A P Jones Pharmacy Escort).
Among the front-wheel-drive favourites are Adrian Linton in the Ravensden/Crane & Equipment/Garbage Gobbler/West Coast Garden Centre/Edwin Clarke Furniture Vauxhall Astra GSi, and Ian Warren in the Subzero Services/Details Car Valet Inc/McEnearney Quality Collision Repair Centre/Aqua Pur Peugeot 206.
Brett Clarke (Shell Helix/Automotive Art/Plus Suzuki Swift GTi) and Neil Barnard (Simpson Motors/Shell Helix/Automotive Art/VISA Suzuki Ignis Sport) will help to keep the pace up right through the field.
