RALLY CLUB CELEBRATES SEASON’S END

More than 120 awards presented at Annual Prizegiving All sides of the island’s motor sport fraternity were honoured at the Barbados Rally Club’s (BRC) Annual Prizegiving on Friday evening (November 29) at Chapel Plantation, St Philip; more than 120 awards were presented, including return tickets to London, courtesy of Virgin Atlantic, title sponsor of the BRC Driver’s and Class Championships.   Among the evening’s awardees were the sport’s volunteers, for whom some of the loudest applause was reserved; long-standing marshals Biddy Barber, Douglas Boyce, Ian Clarke and Everton Smart were acknowledged with trophies, along with others in the Outstanding Marshal and Rookie Marshal categories.   The BRC’s youngest Champion Driver, 21-year-old Conor Roach, is currently at school out of the island, so his father, Derek, who won the title in 1991 and 1992, collected the awards on his behalf. Roach ended the season tied on 150 points with Rhett Watson and the dropped-score rule settled the outcome: each had failed to win his class only once, but Roach’s lowest score was 13 points while Watson’s was 15, so Roach won by two points. The BRC 4wd Championship was won by Roger Hill and Graham Gittens, with Josh Read and Mark Jordan carrying off the trophies in 2wd.   New for 2013, additional awards of free entry for the 2014 BRC Driver’s Championship were presented to Roach, as Clubman Champion, and Watson, as the highest points-scorers in the combined SuperModified classes; they were also won by Neil Corbin (Modified classes), Geoff Noel (4wd classes) and Stuart White (Historic).   In the Chefette MudDogs Safari Championship, Chris O’Neal won the Sextant Challenge Trophy as Champion Navigator for the first time, with Leslie Alleyne adding a fourth Champion Driver title to those he won in 2006, ’08 & ’11, again taking home the Peter Farmer Memorial Trophy. Andy Williams and Joshua Plaza were Chefette Novice Champion Navigator and Driver respectively, winning free entry to the 2014 BRC MudDogs Safari Championship in addition to their trophies, while Omar Boodhoo won an unprecedented fourth Autocross Championship crown.   Club officials thanked the sport’s stakeholders, including marshals, officials, sponsors and the media for contributing to another successful season before members had a chance to look back over another successful season and enjoy a number of motor sport films, including British production company Greenlight TV’s coverage of Sol Rally Barbados 2013, which has already been broadcast in more than 120 countries outside the Caribbean.
