MAYERS FAMILY WIN TOUGH 4 x 4 SAFARI

Front-running rally driver Roger Mayers and father Stephen dominated the Barbados Rally Club’s (BRC) 4 x 4 Safari on Saturday (November 22), beating the opposition – and some tough conditions – to claim their second off-road event of the year; they had won the opening event of the season in March.
With Stephen driving their Toyota Hilux and Roger in charge of navigation, they completed the demanding six-hour event with only 90 penalties. In second place, and winning the Novice Class, were Allan Bayne and Graham Manning, who collected 240 penalties, just 20 ahead of third-placed Warwick Eastmond and Trevor Mapp, both crews driving Suzuki Samurais. Doug Armstrong and Geoffrey Goddard finished fourth on 300 penalties in a Toyota Hilux.
Perhaps the most impressive performance of the day came from the fifth-placed crew, who also finished second in the Novice Class: the only all-girl pairing in the event, Keri-Dawn Watkins and Lisa Roett collected 320 penalties in their Hankook-backed Toyota RAV4, earning the respect of many of the more experienced drivers who trailed in their wake.
Of the 29 crews who left the start at the Vaucluse Raceway, five failed to finish what proved to be a very tough event. The route, which was about 85 per cent off road, took drivers through the parishes of St Thomas, St Peter, St James, St Joseph, and St John on their way to the finish at Colleton Plantation. The rains of the previous week had rendered many of the gulleys treacherously muddy, and many a tow-rope was used.
There is no timing on this type of event, the results based on a series of penalties assessed by use of Direction Checks.
