FAMILY AFFAIR IN BRC NAVIGATIONAL TEST

Roger Mayers won the Pro section of the Barbados Rally Club’s (BRC) Navigational Test on Saturday (March 29) . . . from the passenger seat, navigating for his father Stephen in a Toyota Hilux. With 1500 penalties, they finished 300 ahead of husband and wife crew, Leslie and Annalee Alleyne, in a Mazda B2500.
The Novice section, contested by 10 crews, was won by Stuart Garcia and Christie Blades in a Suzuki Swift GTi, with 3500 penalties; they finished sixth overall, ahead of a number of more experienced crews, and beat their closest Novice rivals Christina Tudor and Lisa Roett (Suzuki Vitara), by 800 penalties.
The event, which started at McEnearney Quality, Wildey, at 4.00pm covered a route of about 80 kilometres, and travelled through five parishes over a four-and-a-half-hour time frame before the finish at the Kendal Sporting Club. There were 21 vehicles entered, with a total of 52 persons – cars were allowed to carry extra passengers – of which 10 entered the Novice section.
One of the event’s organisers, the BRC’s reigning Rookie of the Year Lindsay Farmer, said: “We were aiming to give a rebirth to a form of motor sport that almost all of today’s rally drivers and co-drivers started out doing, and I am very pleased with the result. The feedback has been great – everyone wants to know when the next event will be!
“Interestingly enough, of the 10 novice crews, only two were entered in four-wheel-drive vehicles, which I think proves that there is interest out there among the younger motor sport enthusiasts, but who don't have access to 4x4's to do our off-road safari type of navigational test.”
While a few novice teams got very lost, the majority of crews were able to solve the challenging route which covered the areas of Wildey, Small Ridge, Carmichael, Workmans, Jericho, Todds, Four Roads, Villa Nova, Easy Hall, Redland, Pool, Newcastle, Bath, Codrington, Massiah Street, Bushy Park, Sunbury, Featherbed Lane, Kendal Plantation, Greens, Drax Hall, Ellerton, St Lukes, Brighton, Edgecumb, Ebenezer, Chapel and Carrington.
There were two sections of Tulip navigation and two sections of Straight Line. There was no timing on the event, the results based on penalties assessed by use of Direction Checks – 100 penalties for wrong direction, 200 for off-route, 400 for missing a direction check, 100 for a traffic violation and 100 for calling Rally Control to ask for assistance.
